Loren Coleman is an American cryptozoologist, author of over 40 books, and the founder and director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine — the world's only institution dedicated to cryptozoological artefacts and evidence. Active since the 1960s, he is the most widely cited living authority on cryptid encounters globally.
Coleman became interested in cryptozoology at age 12 after watching the 1958 film Claw of the Caveman and subsequently discovering Ivan T. Sanderson's writings. He has conducted field investigations on every inhabited continent and is credited with coining or popularising several cryptid classifications. He holds a master's degree in psychiatric social work and spent years as a clinical social worker before devoting himself full-time to cryptozoological research.
